Past Video Projects Mediae video production
This video tells the story of Shinyanga region in Central Tanzania where local
knowledge about conservation of natural resources and restoration of range lands
for livelihood security has enabled remarkable conservation of wood and
grasslands. Funding came from IUCN.
| Mega fm, Gulu Documentary |
DFID have commissioned Mediae to produce a documentary for both British, African and international television on the radio project that Mediae has managed in Gulu, Northern Uganda. This is a region that has been suffered civil war for over twenty years now and the on-going insecurity and conflict remains a significant barrier to development and effective tackling of poverty in the North. The building and launch of the local fm radio station, Mega FM, has provided an important forum for the different factions to air their views, as well as a mechanism that allows for discussions on peace-building in the area. The documentary has been shown on BBC World and also a shortened version, on BBC's Newsnight.
Programme production for this 13 part series in now complete and is being broadcast, not only on Ugandan television, but has also been re-broadcast three times on Kenyan television, as well as across African on MNet channel. Topics such as cholera, HIV/Aids, malaria and other pertinent health issues are tackled, intermingled with the loves and lives of the staff working at Centre 4 health clinic, Uganda.
Ford Foundation have funded Mediae to support a local theatre troupe in Uganda called the Bakayimbira Dramactors
who produce a weekly drama series for Ugandan TV. The troupe approached Mediae
and asked them to support them in the production process.
Starsearch is Kenya's answer to Pop Idol - a televised music talent search in which the viewers are the ones to chose the winners, using SMS voting. Its just one of the initiatives set up by Action for Music, a new Kenyan NGO inspired by David Campbell, which aims to promote East African music and musicians. The winners get a cash prize, a video and a recording contract. The programmes
were sponsored by Safaricom.
Mediae have recently completed a multi-media package for CAPE (Community-based animal health and participatory epidemiology) which focuses on the services provided by community animal health workers in pastoralist communities. A series of videos have been produced which aim to persuade sceptics that the work that CAHWs do is invaluable, especially in poor and remote areas, where vetinerary services are scarce.
This is a moving and tragic story of a mother who lives on Kenya's coast and loses her baby to malaria. DFID funded the production of this video, which has been broadcast on television and has been used at an international conference on malaria and its prevention.
Building for the Future is a video that follows the community involvement of rural villagers both to construct and engage in the management of their local schools. The video is the first in a DFID series for East Africa, which outlines a sustainable strategy whereby teachers, schools and parents are innovators in education.
Date Rape was part of a training package, produced in conjunction with UNICEF, aimed at youth counsellors who support their peers on issues relating to sexual reproductive health. The video has been used in training in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia.
| Communication Skills for Agricultural Extensin Workers |
Communication skills are made easy through a six-part series of 20 minute videos and guidebook produced by Mediae and Nairobi's Agricultural Information Centre. The series, although produced for agricultural extension workers, is a relevant and effective course for development workers everywhere. Topics range from identification of common communication problems to suggestions for giving demonstrations, speaking in public, formal meetings, group discussions, visual aides and much more.
IUCN supported the production of Big Fish, Small Fry, a documentary on the Lake Victoria environmental distaster, where Nile Perch have eradicated the indigenous fish poulation and a fish processing plant has suffocated the local economy where women have lost at least 150,000 jobs.
| The Poor Find Their Voice |
This is a documentary that allows the poor themselves to identify the real issues of poverty and demonstrates how poverty eradication strategies can be made more effective. Oxfam and DFID supported the production of the video.
| Partners in Time: Natural Forest Conservation in Kenya |
This video explores the key issues facing forest conservation in Kenya today. Problems and solutions related to biodiversity, management issues, sustainable development and the future of Kenya's indigenous forest are all discussed. It has been used on African television, as well as for training purposes with community forestry projects, NGOs and environmental assessment training.
This is a documentary and training video that highlights the importance of the papyrus plant to reinvigorate livelihoods and the economy near Lake Victoria. With funding from the Belgian Government, in conjunction with Kenya Marine Research Institute, the video was made for training in Luo, the local language on the banks of the lake. The video was later made for television broadcast in English.
The EU supported the production of Daudi's Dream, a four part series of 20-minute drama videos for the Tanzanian Coffee Board, to train farmers on issues relating to privatision of the coffee industry and the opportunities for commercial growth in coffee production.
The importance of livestock research to farmers and pastorlaists in Kenya and Ethiopia is shown in "Ancient Partnerships", a documentary made for hte International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) for use in advocacy and fundraising.
| Soil and Water Conservation |
Soil and Water Conservation is a multi-purpose series that looks at the catchment approach to soil conservation, the importance of agro-forestry in soil conservation and the approach and success of the SIDA project in in Kenya. This series has been used on African TV and for training with agricultural extension staff and farmers.
This is a series of mini documentaries which show the growing move towards organic and sustainable farming practices. In particular, agro-forestry, soil conservation, water harvesting, compost making, bee-keeping and vegetable nurseries.
This is a video led training series that has been implemented in 100 towns all over Kenya. The material forms the basis if a three day course for town planners and dwellers, to discuss possible expansion and damage of soil erosion and pollution. The videos aim to promote community action.
| The Radio Producer's Dream |
These videos form part of a five day training course for radio producers and those interested in using radio, who wish to improve the quality and effectiveness of radio to meet development needs. This drama in the video series aims to promote discussion on effective radio programming, including radio soap opera, radio magazine production and identifying audience needs. The training has been conducted in Zambia, Somalia, Uganda and Kenya.
This is a series of videos that form the basis of a five day discussion cours which addresses the issues of effective staff supervision and management in a government extension system. The course is entirely participatory, with all material designed for Africans, supported by the BBC Open University Production Centre and Reading University.
This is a 50 minute documentary seen in over 50 countries, worldwide. Winner of the Silver Medal Prix Leanardo, Parma, Italy, 1995, this is the story of the Masai and the Tsetese fly threat to their environment, filmed from the Masai's point of view. The film was made for ODA and UNEP.
This is a drama which aims to promote discusseion on gender issues in rural areas in Kenya and the role that women have in managing farm activities.
