Wambui Series Gallery

Mediae has recently completed a livestock research project, conducted in Embu District, Kenya which looked at the effectiveness of using comic books to disseminate information relating to livestock health. The series of 8 booklets, which follow a central character called Wambui, proved successful, not just at informing school children, but also their parents and other members of the community. Churches proved to be an effective distribution mechanism too. This project was funded by NR International/DFID.

Tembea na Majira

In conjunction with Mediae's Kenyan radio soap opera, there has been innovative and exciting use of print materials, which have supported issues raised in the soap. Leaflets and calendars were produced and disseminated on Cadbury mobile vans, which toured round rural market places in Kenya. Issues discussed included what a woman can do if she is the victim of domestic violence, how young girls can avoid being sexually abused, what parents can do to improve the management of their local school.

In addition to the print material, a Mediae compere travelled with the Cadbury's mobile vans, and ran competitions with the crowds that gathered round. He/she made use of giant posters, erected on the van, and used as a visual aide.

Malaria Campaign

Alongside the Mother's Story video (above), Mediae produced a variety of leaflets, which described the appropriate means to be taken to prevent contracting the disease. Mediae developed these for three audiences: first, for illiterate and semi-literate audiences, the information was communicated through a series of illustrations, for those who were more literate, the illustrations were supported by dialogue boxes and simple, key messages and for those who were literate, the messages were written and were more technical. As a final component of the strategy, the leaflet was translated and printed in two languages, then distributed as an insert in the newspaper, at matatu stands, in clinics, by health workers and via mobile vans

Communication Skills Booklet

This booklet is used in conjunction with the series of videos during the participatory training course on improving communication skills. Topics range from identification of common communication problems to suggestions for improving the giving of demonstrations, speaking in public, formal meetings, group discussions and the use of visual aides.
