Past Research Projects Mediae research
Mediae both commission outside research companies to conduct quantitative surveys on media projects they are involved in, as well as conducting their own qualitative research.
Qualitative Research - Tembea na Majira
The Tembea na Majira production team, in collaboration with a student at IRDD, Reading University, have just completed fieldwork in three Provinces in Kenya. A total of twelve focus group discussions have been held with both rural men and women to find out their comments on Tembea na Majira and also to assess the impact that programmes have had on their knowledge, attitude and practice on topics such as malaria, biological control of maize stalk borer and HIV/Aids.
Qualitative and Quantitative Research - Tanzania
Two major studies were conducted in the course of 2003 which determined the strategy to be pursued in implementing the radio project, recently launched there. The first was a qualitative piece of work which looked at what rural people's radio listening habits are as well as their information needs. The second was a quantitative survey which gave the production team clear guidance as to which stations we should be broadcasting on and at what times, as well as providing baseline data on people's knowledge, attitude and practice on certain topics.
Research International completed a national survey in Kenya in 2002, where they looked at the popularity of Mediae's radio soap "Tembea na Majira". Figures show that 5.5 million adult listeners tune in regularly to the show in Kenya, and that the programme is the second most listened to on Kenya's national radio.
Radio listenership in Zambezia Province, Mozambique
Mediae recently commissioned a survey in Zambezia Province, Mozambique the main aim of which was to assess listenership to radio programmes being produced by the Mediae managed radio project there. Results show a staggering 62% listenership to the drama programmes being transmitted in Lomwe and Chuabo - the two most prolific local languages in the province. This is an incredible result, especially as programmes have only been on air for 6 months when the study was undertaken.
Radio Feasibility, South and Central Sudan
Mediae are concluding a piece of research, in which the potential of radio in promoting peace in South and Central Sudan is assessed. This study has comprised a random sample survey of 900 respondents, with back up qualitative research with focus groups in the region.
A series of five quantitative studies have been conducted over the course of the last five years, looking at the impact and listenership of Tembea na Majira, the Ki-Swahili radio soap in Kenya. These have been supported by quantitative research, usually in the form of focus group discussions, implemented by the Tembea na Majira production team.
Zambezia Province, Mozambique
Mediae commissioned two quantitative surveys, conducted by Northumbria University, which assess radio ownership, access and listenership in Zambezia Province, Mozambique. One provided a baseline, the results of which were compared with a follow-up survey, conducted fifteen months later, when Mediae programmes had been on-air in the region for six months. The results showed 62% listenership accross the Province.
Best Practice Guidelines, Communication of Natural Resource Research Findings
Mediae worked with AERDD, Reading University on a two year research study, looking at DFID funded, natural resource research projects (both strategic and adaptive research), resulting in a booklet outlining how communication of research findings can be improved.
