Mediae radio production

Mega fm, Gulu, Northern Uganda

Paving the way for innovative and commercially viable radio for development, Mediae were commissioned by DFID to help the station provide relevant programming for peace and conflict resolution, education and entertainment in the area. The station was constructed in Gulu and Mega FM was launched. A thorough training programme in radio production skills was implemented with a local team of producers and the station attracted a dedicated and loyal listenership amongst the Acholi people.  The station is now managed by a local team and continues to broadcast to the region.

Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland Youth and Radio Project

In 2005/6 UNICEF commissioned Mediae to carry out a baseline study which assessed radio programme preferences for youth in Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland.   The feasibility study also assessed the potential of local fm radio stations, training possibilities for producers and news journalists and future programme production and transmission for youth in the region.

Radio Research, South and Central Sudan

Mediae commissioned audience research in South and Central Sudan in early 2003, to assess the potential that radio might have in bringing about conflict resolution in the area, as well as development opportunities. They are currently contributing to the World Bank/UN Joint Assessment Mission (JAM) with regard to the role the media can play in promoting peace and development in all of Sudan (see Consultancy and Training).

Zambezia Province, Mozambique

Mediae have completed a successful, two year project in Zambezia Province, Mozambique. The radio component comprised a weekly soap opera and supporting magazine programme, in two local vernaculars, broadcast on Radio Mozambique. Programmes have been shown to be immensely popular and effective at both entertaining and educating very remote and rural audiences.

Peace Building, Somalia

With UNESCO support, Mediae trained a Somali radio production team to produce their own radio soap, the aim of which is to encourage peace and good governance in Somalia. This programme, "Haama Dhar" is still on-air and is now broadcast on the BBC, Somali Service.

Food Security, Somalia

Mediae undertook a survey for the Food Security Analysis Unit in Somalia which looked at effective ways of providing information to pastoralists, as well as reviewing how information was used among other UN agencies and NGOs.

Radio Feasibility, Zambia

Mediae have conducted a number of consultancies with SIDA and the British Council in Zambia, looking at the feasibility of starting radio soap opera for rural listeners in Zambia. A five day training course was conducted with actors and radio producers at ZAMCOM, focusing on how to produce effective and creative radio programmes that will meet audience needs.

Voice of Teso, Uganda

Mediae undertook a detailed analysis of the impact that a series of radio programmes on women's land right issues might have for rural women in Eastern Uganda. The research also assessed how many people were being reached on radio both in Nakasongola, Luwero and Soroti regions of Uganda, and how effective the local fm radio was in changing listeners knowledge, attitude and practice relating to the recently changed Land Act.

Radio Soap for Rural Youth in Uganda

Mediae researched the possibilities of developing a series of radio drama programmes for national coverage in Uganda, targeted especially at the rural and peri-urban youth, and to be funded by UNICEF. Issues to be included focused on reproductive health and especially HIV/AIDs.

Radio Training Package

Mediae have developed a five day training package which looks at ways in which interested parties can create entertaining, relevant and informative radio programmes. The training course uses videos to trigger discussion amongst participants. It has been successfully conducted in Zambia, Lesotho, Somalia and Kenya
