Current Research Projects
Mediae research

As well as conducting their own qualitative research, Mediae commission external, quantitative studies, as can be seen below.

Somalia and Youth

Mediae have commissioned Research Solutions to undertake both qualitative and quantitative research in Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland to investigate which issues are important to youth and how best to tackle these, using radio. The research will feed into a two year project, funded by UNICEF, that will collaborate closely with local radio broadcasters and producers to make appealing and informative programmes for adolescents in the region.

Makutano Junction Gallery

One of the key objectives of the drama tv series being broadcast in Kenya and beyond is to assess the impact that television can have on viewers livelihoods in rural and peri-urban areas. Mediae have conducted a national baseline survey in Kenya, against which they have compared results of a follow-up survey, which was conducted after programme transmission of Series One. Mediae also ran a series of focus group discussion to get in-depth responses on the programmes themselves.  Findings were extremely positive, showing an audience of around 5 million in Kenya alone.

Primary Numeracy and Literacy Skills and Television

Mediae is currently conducting research into ways and means of promoting numeracy and literacy skills amongst primary children, using television. Research is being undertaken both in UK, Kenya and other countries such as South Africa.

Gulu Mega FM

Steadman Research Services in Uganda are currently implementing a follow-up survey in Northern Uganda, with which they will assess the impact that Mega FM radio station is having on listeners. The follow-up survey is of critical importance, as it will show to what extent the radio station has fulfilled its function of promoting peace and reconciliation in the region.

Follow up research, Tanzania

In December 2004 Mediae commissioned a 600 respondent, sample survey in Tanzania which aimed to assess current listenership of the Pilika Pilika programmes (broadcast on RTD and local fm stations). The programme currently picks up 1.8 million regular listeners in Tanzania , an encouraging start, having only been on air for six months.
