The Company and Trust
The Trust was established in 1996, is a registered charity in the UK (Charity Number: 1058701) and is run by four trustees (see Who's Who). The Trust’s primary role is to research and promote the impact that the effective development and use of media in Africa can make. Since 1996 the Trust has been awarded grants for a number of different projects. For example, in 2000 UNICEF commissioned the Trust to undertake a feasibility study on producing a radio soap opera for Ugandan rural audiences. In 2001, Ford Foundation approached the Trust to look at ways it might promote music and the arts in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. NR International awarded the Trust a grant to research the impact that comic books distributed to schools, churches and other CBOs have in farmers’ knowledge, attitude and practice on issues relating to livestock health in Kenya. More recently, the Trust has attracted funding from Ford Foundation to build local capacity in Kenya to produce low cost, high quality television drama, which both entertains and educates ever-growing television audiences in the region.
The Mediae Company was established in 1997 (Company Number 3449631). They have two offices: one in Nairobi, Kenya which is headed up by David Campbell (see Who's Who), a media development specialist with twenty years experience. The other office is in Oxfordshire, UK and is run by Kate Lloyd Morgan who has worked as a media in development specialist for ten years, focusing particularly on creative radio for rural audiences. The Company undertakes commercial projects, some of which are commissioned by the Trust, while others are tenders for competitive bids in their own right. Not only does the Company run its own long-term projects, but it also acts in consultative capacity for donors and NGOs. The Company has a core team of five permanent employees (see Who's Who), plus a bank of specialist associates with whom the Company has worked before and who offer expertise is specific areas, such as television educational drama, radio soap opera development, script writing, video directing, radio for conflict resolution and the design of print material.
